Popcorn and Popcorn Sketch are from Billy Argel, a surf-skate-punk-font designer who has put out some great freeware and commercial typefaces recently. Popcorn is a fun sketchy geometric (reminds me of some Josef Albers designs that used to be popular) – there is a sketch verison and a regular version, the regular one is also pretty sketchy though! These are ‘trial’ versions but it looks like they have full character sets, so check out Popcorn! Download the OTF files!

Seven weights of Advent – three thin, three bold, and a good old reliable regular version. From Athens, Greece (not georgia) based designer Andreas Kalpakides (aka IndeGraphics.) What’s Advent like? A nice simple, elegant one – not too far off from Gill Sans maybe, but a bit more interesting. Quirky but not too out-there. More intriguing than Eurostile, but cut from the same cloth. Neuton

Neuton, a legible text face adorned with serifs comes to us from Brian Zick,an autodidactic type-designer, hailing from Arkansas, United States. Born in Pennsylvania, he has lived all over the US, and was homeschooled from an early age. Lekton

Lekton is a nice face inspired by olivetti typewriters created at Isia Urbino by the students Luna Castroni, Stefano Faoro, Emilio Macchia, Elena Papassissa, Michela Povoleri, Tobias Seemiller, and the teacher Luciano Perondi (aka galacticus ineffabilis) in eight hours at Accademia di Belle Arti di Urbino in Italy. The face is supplied in a regular, bold and italic version making it practical for a lot of applications. Lekton is an open-source project, with no copyright or trademark qualification in order to permit the free use of the typeface, that can be modified as well as redesigned.

Titillium

Titillium is born inside the Accademia di Belle Arti di Urbino as a didactic project Course Type design of the Master of Visual Design Campi Visivi from Accademia di Belle Arti di Urbino in Italy.

The aim of the project is the creation of a collective fonts released under OFL to be promoted and shared through a web platform. Each academic year, a dozen of students are working on the project developing and solving problems. The type designers interested in the amendment or revision of Titillium are invited to cooperate or develop their own variants of the character according to the terms specified in the license. We also asking the graphic designers who use Titillium in their projects to send us some characters imagines used in order to prepare a case histories database.

A unique project worth checking back-in on from time to time, Titillium is still evolving and new versions and weights are being added and are planned for the future. A Long Time Ago, In A Galaxy Far Far Away .. RedFive is a nice bold caps only face with a contemporary feeling – industrial and edgey but still friendly, ideal for titling (movie intros maybe?), posters, lots of things that call for the heavy and legible from afar. The face is the work of Ethen Dunham of the Wilmington, DE based Fonthead design – they have been making great faces since 1995! Download the OTF zip.

This one is Destroyed License Plate and it’s a nice one (free for personal use) from Paris, France based graphic designer Damien Gosset -aka- sweeep – Like it rough? this one is nice and dirty – and rough too. it’s too fast. it’s too furious. also it’s a pretty cool block face from Magique Fonts – with upper case, lower case, and not much more .. but when you are spraying you don’t need much more, right vin? a nice font for starting some block logo designs or headlines. Download the TTF.

Molot

Molot – a nice, thick and heavy bold choice that would be a great display face – ideal headline – legible from a far poster for a techno industrial group, you get the picture. Upper and lower cases are the same, it’s got numbers and a little more. Not really a font for setting long passasges or big blocks of body copy. 20 DB

Twenty Dee Bee .. 20DB .. a nice retro-flavored OTF type face from Russian designer Jovanny Lemonad (Ivan Gladkikh). Sort of Art Deco, 20DB is legible and ideal for headlines, titles, display use (i can see it working nicely on posters). It feels a little like Monotypes Broadway typeface, but a little less frilly and deco-ish, a bit more angled and “russian” feeling to me! (does that make sense?) Surface is from Bruno Herfst at Sauce Design in the Netherlands, a very nice medium weight humanist sans-serif font. Falls somewhere between text and display, very friendly. not too hard – not too soft, just right. Lots of foreign characters and such. Download Surface Medium OTF file.

Hattori Hanzo

Ballpark

The Weiner version of Ballpark is a fun funky script that maybe you would see on a logo for a hotdog at a baseball park – pretty neat stuff if that’s what you’re looking for! Created by Mickey Rossi from Atlanta, GA at the Subflux Experiment. Ballpark is slightly reminiscent of Grocers Script, from Wiescher Design but a little smoother and a little more closed – feeling more like an actual flowing script face. Download the weiner!

Josefin Sans Light is a nice fresh face from Typemade, a new independent foundry based in Monterrey, Mexico. “The idea for create this typeface was to make it geometric, elegant and kind of vintage, special for titling. It is based on 1927 Rudolf Koch’s Kabel, 1930 Rudolf Wolf’s Memphis, 1927 Paul Renner’s Futura. My idea was to draw something with good style, specifically that reflects the swedish design and their passion for good lifestyle, and by default all other scandinavian styles. The x-height is half the way from baseline to caps height, unlike any other modern typeface.” Download Josefin Sans Light OTF font.
