Lemisez what? You’d have to ask David Rakowski, the new england area shareware font creating madman who cranked out seemingly thousands of interesting faces in the 90′s, and then sort of moved on, back to music. Well, Lemiesz is a nice BOLD all caps face with numbers. Has a sort of retro – life during wartime feel to it, big bold and easy to read from afar. Download the TTF.

KINKY is a personal lettering project from French designer (now based in Oslo) Fabrice Bats a 5ive – it’s a nice, chucky straight angled and kinda choppy looking font, great for headlines and such – not body copy (no, it isnt 3D) – “NOTE: It’s not a real type, I mean… not like a Georgia, Helvetica… with great kerning, terrific, good options…This lettering is just thought for graphic element uses. (Not for long text). Yes, it’s not perfect, I know, but I like it anyway. And after some demands I just wanted to convert it in .ttf, to use it more easily instead of using Illustrator, in a “letter by letter” process…” Download Kinky TTF beta2.

Freeway Gothic

Freeway Gothic, a very legible free font from American freeware type designer Tom Oetken. It’s Nice, thick, heavy and bold. It sort of captures the spirit of Font Bureau’s Interstate Bold but is a little more extended with a slightly less polished appeal (to me, that is a good thing – i appreciate a font that isn’t too polished). Maybe this face would work great on a highway sign, or any sign that someone needs to read while speeding past. zoom. zoom. Download Freeway Gothic truetype font file.

Lane

Lane, from the prolific Apostrophic Labs is supplied in three versions – Narrow, Posh, and Upper. Narrow is just the nice, elegant plain jane none stylized version of this thin face. Posh adds the knockout stroke drop shadow look. Upper adds a funky underlined lower case variant to the mix, with underlined lower case vowels being the only thing different from the narrow version. Pretty funky when you need it to be, or just simple if that’s what you are looking for. Download the three LANE truetype faces.

OK, again I am hooked on these open source typefaces – they have been of great quality and consistency and of course, they are free to use, share, modfy, etc. Linux Libertine, from the .org of the same name is one such beautiful face – “Letters and fonts have two characteristics: On the one hand they are basic elements of communication and fundamental to our culture, on the other hand they are cultural goods and an artistic work. You are able to see just the first aspect, but when it comes to software you’ll see copyrights and patents even on the most elementary fonts. Therefore we want to give you a free alternative: This is why we founded the Libertine Open Fonts Project.” (also of note, Libertine is the face used on the Wikipedia logo). The package includes a very diverse 20 variants, including Regular, Italic, Bold Italic, Small Capitals, Biolinum (an organic sans-serif and could be also described as organogrotesque) and a few “keyboard” versions ideal for computer documentation. Bastardomulto is a typeface from Studio Hill back in ’97 .. “This is a vintage ’47 Bodoni Poster face that has been ripped apart by pitbulls. It has the upper case only. Orial Bold

Orial Bold, suppplied in Truetype and Opentype formats from Pekalongan, Indonesia based Salman Boosty captures the straight-laced geometric spirit of a simple sans serif face similar to Franklin Gothic and infuses it with beautiful organic floral details. Upper case letters have the vines and leaves growing outside of the letters and in the Lower case they are internal. Salman seems to have started with something plain and common and created something unique and interesting. Great to use in headlines or for display use – drop caps, posters, magazine covers, etc would really look great adorned with this face. Download Orial Bold OTF and TTF fonts.

A funky face from 2001 designed by New York based Harold Lohner, at Harolds Fonts – Inspired by the architectural lettering at the Basilica of Guadalupe, Mexico City. This package contains two versions of this face, Guadalupe and Guadalupe Dos – Guadalupe Dos doesn’t have the extra bits around the letters and is a little ‘cleaner’ looking. Quicksand

An overall very nice sans serif and slightly grotesk and slightly rounded opentype typeface, Quicksand is sure to fill the needs if you seek a nice neutral contemporary face for easy to read signage, text, headlines, etc.. (it feels like a marriage between news gothic and vag rounded to me). Supplied in seven styles- Bold, Bold Oblique, Book, Book Oblique, Dash, Light, and Light Oblique – Quicksand had a lot of options! I especially like the Dash style. OK .. I admit it, I’m a sucker for funky cool ravey-techy fonts like 02.10 from Helsinki, Finlands Emil Bertel at the Fenotype foundry. Nice and bold with some organic blobbyness, 02.10 is provided in regular and italic variations, this would be a great font choice for a techno party flyer or a cover for that mix cd for your basement dj buddy.
