Day Roman

The two-tiers font included in this archive, Day Roman, is a digitally redrawn version of what has come to be historically known as the “Two Line Double Pica Roman”, a typeface designed by 16th century French punchcutter FranÁois Guyot, and used in numerous books between 1535 and 1570, most notable of which are J. Steelsius’s printing of The Bible (1541) and Frisius (1551), Gillis Coppens van Diest’s printing of Erasmus (1544), Georgius (1544), Serlio (1550) and Horatius (1552), and Rotarius’s printing of Livius Brechtius (1549). The type was also used extensively by H. Dunham, and later J. Day, in London (the name Day Roman is simply a reference to J. Day having used the type). Original matrices of Guyot’s roman type are now in the Museum Plantin-Moretus in Antwerp. From 2002, Fredrick Nader at Apostrophic Labs. Download TTFs.

GranDesign Neue Serif

Another nice legible elegant face that’s been floating around a while with no real trackable origin – from ‘rda_dgsn’ is all i really know. Some people say it looks like Myriad Pro from Adobe a bit too much, but I like it just the same. Seven weights of Advent – three thin, three bold, and a good old reliable regular version. From Athens, Greece (not georgia) based designer Andreas Kalpakides (aka IndeGraphics.) What’s Advent like? A nice simple, elegant one – not too far off from Gill Sans maybe, but a bit more interesting. Quirky but not too out-there. More intriguing than Eurostile, but cut from the same cloth. AR Techni

Birth of a Hero

Somewhere between the straight laced ITC Avant Garde Gothic Book and the funky Aaux Light with a little bit of dirty funk thrown in, falls Birth of a Hero. It’s a bit rough and grungy but has undeniable roots in those esteemed faces. This font is from the canadian designer known as Last Soundtrack, and comes with the usual upper and lower case letters, numbers, punctuation and some accented characters to take it around the globe. Cabin

From Pablo Impallari (design, argentenia) with the help of Igino Marini (spacing and kerning, italy) comes the Cabin family. Pablo is also behind the Lobster Font i posted a while back, Cabin is a nice serious sans serif typeface that comes in 8 styles – Regular, Italic, Medium, Medium Italic, SemiBold, SemiboldItalic, Bold, BoldItalic. Upon first impression Cabin has a very typical humanist sans-serif feel, smooth with curves, thin and light but still authoritative. It’s not Helvetica or Gill Sans, although some people who don’t look too close may confuse it. Cabin is elegantly modern and refreshing and highly useable for print and web designs and it’s a great alternative to fonts people see every day. (and check out that @!!) Download Cabin TTFs.

Neuton

Neuton, a legible text face adorned with serifs comes to us from Brian Zick,an autodidactic type-designer, hailing from Arkansas, United States. Born in Pennsylvania, he has lived all over the US, and was homeschooled from an early age. Titillium

Titillium is born inside the Accademia di Belle Arti di Urbino as a didactic project Course Type design of the Master of Visual Design Campi Visivi from Accademia di Belle Arti di Urbino in Italy.

The aim of the project is the creation of a collective fonts released under OFL to be promoted and shared through a web platform. Each academic year, a dozen of students are working on the project developing and solving problems. The type designers interested in the amendment or revision of Titillium are invited to cooperate or develop their own variants of the character according to the terms specified in the license. We also asking the graphic designers who use Titillium in their projects to send us some characters imagines used in order to prepare a case histories database.

A unique project worth checking back-in on from time to time, Titillium is still evolving and new versions and weights are being added and are planned for the future. Crimson Text

Crimson Text, from Toronto-based designer Sebastian Koch who says “Crimson Text is a font family for book production in the tradition of beautiful oldstyle typefaces. There are a lot of great free fonts around, but one kind is missing: those Garamond-inspired types with all the little niceties like oldstyle figures, small caps, fleurons, math characters and the like. In fact, a lot of time is spend developing free knock-offs of ugly “standards” like Times and Helvetica. Crimson Text is inspired by the fantastic work of people like Jan Tschichold, Robert Slimbach and Jonathan Hoefler. I hope that the free type community will one day be able to enjoy Crimson Text as a beautiful workhorse.” Definitely a nice face worth checking out, even though it is still in its early stages. Comfortaa

From Copenhagen, Denmark based first time font creator Johan Aakerlund comes Comfortaa in Thin, Regular and Bold weights. Johan says “I hope you can use my font – please share it with the world” and that’s what we’re trying to do. Freeway Gothic

Freeway Gothic, a very legible free font from American freeware type designer Tom Oetken. It’s Nice, thick, heavy and bold. It sort of captures the spirit of Font Bureau’s Interstate Bold but is a little more extended with a slightly less polished appeal (to me, that is a good thing – i appreciate a font that isn’t too polished). Maybe this face would work great on a highway sign, or any sign that someone needs to read while speeding past. zoom. zoom. Download Freeway Gothic truetype font file.

Hattori Hanzo

Nobile

Nobile from Vernon Adams – a furniture restorer, woodcarver and typeface designer – via newtypo is licensed under the SIL Open Font License. Nobile is designed to work with the technologies of digital screens and handheld devices without losing the distinctive look more usually found in fonts designed for printing. Going back to William Morris’s baseline “Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful”, the aim was to design a font that could function well, have good legibility on screen yet also be good loooking, not only at larger display sizes but also right down to small text sizes.
